Abstract

This thesis is titled “Interethnic Social Interaction in Condet: Harmonization of the and Migrant Communities, 1974–2005.” This thesis examines the socio-economic changes in Condet resulting from urbanization. Its objective is to understand how the Betawi community, as the indigenous population, harmonizes with migrants through social interaction. The research method used was the historical method, which consisted of four stages. The first stage was heuristics, which involved collecting primary sources in the form of Jakarta governor decrees from 1974, 1999, 2002, 2005 and conducting interviews using oral history methods. The interviewees included Habib Ali Murtadho (Arab), Bang Lantur (Betawi), Sri Supriyati (Javanese), and Djusnaini (Minangkabau). The second stage involved source criticism to ensure the validity of the sources obtained. The third stage is interpretation, which involves interpreting the facts obtained from the sources that have been critiqued in theprevious step. The final stage is historiography or writing in the form of a undergraduate thesis. The research findings indicate that interethnic interactions in Condet proceed harmoniously through religious activities, traditional customs, social organizations, and economic life. Islam serves as a unifying force, while Betawi traditions and immigrant cultures blend through acculturation. The impact of diversity is evident in the emergence of new economic enterprises, the strengthening of social networks, and the gradual erosion of certain agrarian traditions due to land-use conversion. This study concludes that social interaction grounded in openness, religiosity, and tolerance can foster harmony while enriching local culture, despite presenting challenges such as economic inequality and social change. Diversity not only enriches social and cultural structures but also serves as a productive force driving overall community well-being and setting a model for socio-cultural relations.
