Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing impoliteness strategies in the In Time (2011) movie. The data were taken from arguments uttered by the main character, Will Salas, which were then analyzed based on impoliteness strategies by Culpeper (1996). The 16 utterances were found in the form of arguments that used impoliteness strategies. The data were categorized into four strategies, namely bald-on-record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and sarcasm or mock politeness. The findings show that the main character, Will Salas, predominantly uses sarcasm or mock politeness in his speech. In addition, the use of positive and negative politeness was also found. There are two positive politeness used by the main character, namely calling the other names/ridicule identity and not interested/trivialize. Meanwhile, the negative politeness found consists of condescend, scorned or ridicule and ridicule concerns. These findings demonstrate that the main character, Will Salas, frequently uses irony, mockery, and insincere politeness when faced with serious or threatening situations.
