Abstract
GALA MUDO URANG NAN LIMO SUKU IN NAGARI PAUH V, PAUH DISTRICT, PADANG CITY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF LINGUISTIC LANDSCAPE AND ANTHROPONYMY Hafizah Hardhiyyah Asrul 2420721001 Supervisor 1: Prof. Dr. Oktavianus, M. Hum. Supervisor 2: Dr. Fajri Usman, M. Hum. Abstract This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The object of this study is the anthroponymy of gala mudo among the Urang nan Limo Suku community in Nagari Pauh V, Pauh District, Padang City, from a linguistic landscape perspective. The aim is to analyze linguistic forms, meanings, functions, and cultural values. There were 63 data collected through observation, in depth interviews using snowball sampling techniques based on 5 tribes from 6 villages spread across Nagari Pauh V. The analysis was conducted based on linguistic units (words and phrases), functions according to Leech and Joseph, meanings according to Leech, cultural values according to Alisjahbana's perspective, linguistic landscapes according to Schecter, and anthroponymy according to Bourdieu's perspective. The results of the analysis show that in terms of linguistic form, gala mudo is dominated by noun phrases (60 data) that reflect the traditional hierarchy (based on Panghulu, Urang Tuo, Pandik, and Dubalang). From the 63 data analyzed, it was found that gala mudo predominantly contained connotative and conceptual meanings that represented the realities of daily life and the functional roles of gala recipients. From an axiological perspective, four main value groups were identified, including the value of power (14 data), the value of wealth (9 data), the value of intellectualism (9 data), and the value of glory (11 data). Functionally, gala mudo serves as a marker of the transition from single to adult (married) status, a guardian of self-esteem and community identity, and an instrument for preserving the Minangkabau language amid the tide of globalization and modernization. Furthermore, the findings of the study reflect the characteristics of the Nagari Pauh V community in Padang City as a migrant community in accordance with the provisions of luhak bapangulu rantau barajo, which is more aristocratic in nature, including tribes that can be genealogically identified as tribes under the umbrella of the democratic Bodi-Caniago clan. This shows that gala mudo is a holistic-integrative identity in linguistic, social, political, cultural, and moral forms within the social order of Nagari Pauh V. Keywords: anthroponymy, cultural reflection, function, gala mudo, linguistic landscape, and meaning.
