Abstract

Castellated steel beams are increasingly used in modern construction due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, architectural flexibility, and efficient material utilization. However, the presence of web openings introduces complex stress distributions that significantly influence structural performance, particularly under cyclic loading representative of seismic actions. This study experimentally investigated the cyclic behaviour of castellated steel beams with hexagonal web openings and compared their response with monotonic loading. A full-scale beam specimen was tested under a displacement-controlled cyclic loading protocol in accordance with ANSI/AISC 341-16 provisions. Main parameters including hysteretic response, stiffness degradation, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity were evaluated. The results demonstrated stable hysteretic behaviour with gradual stiffness degradation and substantial energy dissipation, indicating favorable seismic performance despite local web-post buckling around openings. Comparisons with monotonic loading revealed comparable ultimate strength and ductility. The findings contribute experimental evidence to support the application of castellated beams in structures subjected to seismic and other dynamic loading scenarios.
