Abstract

This research examines how Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing portrays racial discrimination that passes from one generation to another. Using the sociology of literature approach and Taine theories regarding sociology of literature race, milieu and moment, this research focus on the various forms of injustice faced by each generation of characters and how they respond to it in their own ways. The findings reveal that discrimination in Homegoing develops along with history itself. Although the methods of discrimination changed, the pain and inequality remained. Each generation in the novel represents a struggle to survive and to heal some by enduring, others by remembering and reclaiming their identity. Homegoing therefore stands as more than a family saga; it is also a reflection on how history leaves deep marks on people’s lives and continues to shape their sense of belonging.
