Abstract

This study aims to analyse the Experiential Meaning in the Israeli Ambassador’s speech in the United Nations using the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) from Michael Halliday, by using the transitivity analysis in the political speech of Gilad Erdan, on May 10, 2024 regarding the Palestinian rights resolution. The research method is presented in qualitative descriptive. The data is a transcription of Erdan's speech taken from the official video of the UN meeting on the PBS NewsHour YouTube channel, supplemented by the minutes of the meeting obtained from the UN website. The results showed that Material processes were the most dominant, at 50%, followed by Relational processes (23%), and Mental processes (19%). The Material process is used to highlight concrete and aggressive actions, by portraying Palestine and UN member as perpetrators of destructive acts. The Relational process functions to assess the participants, while the Mental process reflects the speaker's awareness in inviting the audience to understand the violation of human values. Furthermore, the most common circumstance is Location (43%), which emphasizes the historical, moral, and emotional context of the speech. Overall, the results of this study show that political speech not only functions as a medium of information delivery but also as an ideological tool to shape the social reality and political ideology of speaker.
