Abstract

This study examines the syntactic structures and systems used by UKS UNAND members in English conversations. The analysis applies Chomsky’s (1957) phrase structure and transformational grammar, along with the frameworks of Burton- Roberts (2016) and Morley (2000). The data consist of 31 utterances collected from spontaneous conversations. The results show that subjects (38 instances) and predicates (42 instances) occur most frequently, indicating that most utterances are complete clauses. In terms of syntactic categories, pronouns (24.6%) and verbs (22.3%) dominate, reflecting the interactive and action-oriented nature of spoken communication, while adverbs (22.3%) frequently appear to mark time, manner, and frequency. Regarding syntactic systems, present tense is predominantly used (77.8%), followed by simple aspect (57.1%). Active voice (93.5%) is strongly preferred over passive voice (6.5%). In terms of sentence types, simple sentences dominate (71%), followed by complex (19.4%), compound (6.5%), and compound- complex sentences (3.1%). These findings indicate that informal spoken English favors grammatical simplicity, clarity, and personal engagement.
