Abstract

This thesis examines the female main character (Lily Bloom)’s psychological struggles in breaking the cycle of domestic violence in Colleen Hoover’s novel It Ends With Us. This research applies psychoanalytic criticism by using Judith Herman’s theory of trauma, Sigmund Freud’s theory of anxiety, and Anna Freud’s theory of defense mechanism. Bloom’s experiences of witnessing domestic violence in childhood manifest as trauma, which is re-triggered in her marriage with Ryle in a form of anxiety. These psychological pressures lead her to use defense mechanisms such as identification, undoing, displacement, and suppression to cope with her emotional distress. Lily’s self-awareness enables her to use sublimation defense mechanism, transforming her pain into a conscious decision to protect her daughter by ending the abusive relationship. Through this analysis, the study highlights how literature reflects the psychological impact of domestic violence, the use of defense mechanisms as coping strategies, and the process of achieving psychological maturity. It emphasizes the significant role of personal awareness and emotional strength in breaking the cycle of abuse.
