Abstract
YELFI DELIANI BP 0810811004 Social and Political Sciences Faculty, Department of Sociology, Andalas University, Padang. Thesis Title: BÖWÖ IN NIAS CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY (Case Study: Gunung Sitoli District). Number of pages 81 pages. Supervisor I Prof. Dr. Afrizal, MA Supervisor II Dr. Maihasni, M,Si. One of the important phases in the human life jovrney marriage. Marriage implemented to form a family and are expected to continue well the lineage into the next generation. For Nias community, one of the requisite for marriage is the payment of dowry called böwö. Böwö will be paid by the family of the groom to the family of the woman. The high amount payable böwö, impact, both of men and women in Nias. Nevertheless, böwö remains a requisite in marriage. For that, this study examines why böwö as a requisite of marriage in Nias contemporary community still practice? This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive type. To obtain the data and information which are relevant with the purpose of the study conducted interviews and observations. Retrieval and selection of informants conducted by purposive sampling (intentional). The data analysis used in this study is the data analysis Miles and Huberman version with George Homans social exchange theory. The results showed that the tradition still practiced in marriage böwö Nias Contemporary society. In every marriage on the people of Nias is no term that does not use böwö, meaning that all the good people among the middle class or upper middle class still practicing böwö in marriage. Cause böwö still practiced in marriage Nias Contemporary society is the first böwö still needed by a family of women. Böwö given necessary to finance the wedding, from the first day to the needs of the party last. Both are böwö as a symbol of social status of both parties who support people in marriage hold. For the woman, the higher the better school or work the higher the bride böwö demanded. In contrast to the men, the greater böwö who could be paid and the family regarded the man amongst the people. Thirdly because of the sanctions for violators böwö. Sanctions is that they would be ostracized from the community.
