Abstract

This study aims to reveal the consequences of internalizing superiority complex to shield the underlying inferiority feelings as seen through Raskolnikov, the main character, in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. This thesis utilizes Friedrich Nietzsche’s Übermensch to observe the framework of Raskolnikov’s philosophical theory, and Alfred Adler’s superiority complex to examine the characteristics and the consequences of superiority complex. This study employs Qualitative analysis with library data collection methods. The findings reveal that Raskolnikov’s philosophical theory is flawed, because it produces self-arrogance and serves as a justification for him to murder people. Additionally, as a result of internalizing superiority complex, Raskolnikov dehumanizes others, acts aggressive toward those who pose a threat to his superiority complex, lacks empathy, undergoes self-alienation, exhibits a dualistic nature, and nearly commits suicide. Furthermore, this study shows that the novel contains anti-nihilism messages and moral lessons on the importance of love, suffering, and redemption.
