Abstract

This thesis analyzes individualism and alienation in neoliberal society as seen in the novel Individutopia by Joss Sheldon. This research aims to examine the effects of oligarchic policies on the socio-economic situation in London. London in 2084 is the place where the oligarchs hold unlimited power to control both society and economic. In conducting this research, the researcher employs a qualitative method, drawing on the theory of Marxism and the concept of alienation as outlined in Karl Marx's Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844. The research finds that the portrayal of London in 2084 exemplifies four types of alienation described by Karl Marx through the character of Renee as represent of working class experiencing in London in the 2084. This research also finds that the conflict between the oligarch and laborers happens to fulfill their interests. The oligarch seeks to maintain their power, while the laborers seek a fair share in London’s socio-economic domains. In the end, Renee decides to leave London for a better society.
