Abstract
This study investigates the formation of slang words used by Tyrese Haliburton, focusing on linguistic features observed in an episode of Podcast P featuring NBA Superstar Paul George and guest Tyrese Haliburton. Haliburton, a professional basketball player for the Indiana Pacers, engages in a conversational exchange but serves as the primary data. This research aims to assist readers in knowing and categorizing slang word formation through Tyrese Haliburton, as found in an episode of Podcast P, by using Mattiello's (2008) theory as the grand theory. The data was taken from the official YouTube channel of Podcast P, uploaded in July 2023, which contains a conversation between Tyrese Haliburton and Paul George as the host and two other co-hosts. The data was analyzed using qualitative research methods, and the results were presented descriptively. The results of this study show that from the episodes on the podcast and video analyzed, it was found that there are nine categories of slang word formation used by Tyrese Haliburton, such as (1) compounding, (2) suffixation, (3) conversion, (4) back-formation, (5) reduplicative, (6) initialisms, (7) blending, (8) clipping, (9) variation. In the category classification, 33 data of slang word formation were. In the result of analysis, Tyrese Haliburton often uses slang word formation categories such as compounding and clipping as much as (21,21%). These findings suggest that Tyrese Haliburton, who is particularly involved in the professional basketball context, tends to favor specific strategies for creating slang expressions at the same time reflect to speaker-oriented sociological properties in Mattiello's (2008) book, which is group restriction and informality.
