Abstract

This undergraduate thesis examines the use of metaphors in the dialogues inside the video game “Far Cry 5”, utilizing Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) that is developed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) as primary critical framework. CMT classifies metaphors into three types; Ontological, Orientational, and Structural. The theory used to aim on identifying and analyze types of metaphors and what message the characters’ convey in their dialogues. The study analyzed 41 Metaphorical Expressions found in the characters’ dialogues inside the game. The findings reveal that the occurrence of Ontological Metaphors have the highest amount in this game with 28 occurrences, followed by Orientational Metaphors with 9 occurrences and Structural Metaphors only 4 occurrences. This study contributes to the expansion of the field of the game studies and linguistics by highlighting how metaphors inside the interactive platform such as game can serve as a medium to understand human linguistic cognition.
