Abstract

This thesis analyzes the intersectionality of gender identity and social class in the novel Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin. This study aims to see how the novel presents conflicts about gender identity experienced by the main characters and how social class influences them in expressing their gender identity that is not in accordance with the conservative views of society. This study applies the intersectionality theory by Kimberle Crenshaw and uses qualitative methods to descriptively explain the results of the analysis obtained. It was found that the main characters have experienced conflict both internally and externally due to their gender identity that is not in accordance with the gender binary that has been established in society, so that they experience social anxiety and receive various forms of discrimination. This thesis will also explain that it turns out that social class is very influential in putting great pressure on the main characters so that rather than revealing their gender identity, they choose to hide it, despite the fact that they were born into families in the upper social class. The main characters show the intersection of their gender identity with their social class position and how it affects their life experiences as they experience non-binary gender identity in the midst of a society that still thinks conservatively.
