Abstract
Sunkist or known as limequat (Citrus × floridana) is a hybrid of lime (Citrus aurantifolia) and kumquat (Citrus japonica) developed by Walter T. Swingle in 1909. This plant belongs to the Rutaceae family and is known as a high economic value variety. However, the leaves are often not utilized and only become waste, even though this part contains essential oils that have the potential to be utilized. This study aims to determine the chemical components of essential oils from sunkist leaves and evaluate their potential toxicity. Sunkist lime leaf essential oil was obtained through a hydrodistillation process producing 5 mL of essential oil with a yield of 0.4856% (w/w) and a density of 0,9713 g/mL. Characterization of chemical compounds from sunkist leaf essential oil was carried out using Gas Chromathography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The analysis results showed the presence of 34 compounds consisting of 4 hydrocarbon monoterpene compounds, 3 oxygenated monoterpene compounds, and 2 oxygenated sesquiterpene compounds with five main compounds namely Hydroperoxide, 1-methyl-1-phenylethyl (21.81), Gibberellic acid (14.34), 4-Terpinenyl acetate (13.34), Ricinoleic acid (11.53), and γ-Terpinene (7.07%). The toxicity test of essential oils used the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The results showed that the essential oil of sunkist orange leaves had a strong toxic effect on Artemia salina Leach shrimp larvae, with an LC50 value of 57.77 μg/mL.
