Abstract

This research analyzes the subtitling strategies used in the Indonesian subtitles of The Hateful Eight movie, based on Henrik Gottlieb’s theory of ten subtitling strategies. The study aims to identify and describe the strategies applied in translating the English dialogue into Indonesian, considering linguistic, cultural, and technical aspects of audiovisual translation. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through content analysis of selected scenes from the official Indonesian subtitles on Netflix. The findings show that only eight of the ten strategies proposed by Gottlieb were used: transfer, paraphrase, imitation, condensation, deletion, resignation, expansion, and transcription. The most dominant strategy was transfer (53.49%), followed by paraphrase (27.13%) and imitation (14.73%). Strategies like dislocation and decimation were not found. The use of different strategies reflects the subtitler’s effort to maintain meaning, naturalness, and readability while adapting to subtitle constraints. This study provides insight into how subtitling strategies help bridge language and cultural gaps in film translation.
