Abstract

Functional syntax is the part of linguistics that deals with communications functions in the form of systems or choice in text-sentence, that are interrelated from the form or stucture itself. This research aims to identify the adverbially functioning element of clause structure in the book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and then interpreting the context of situation used in the book. The analysis was done by labelling the element of clause structure in the terms outlined with a descriptive explanation. This research showed there are 506 data identified adverbially functioning element with two classification: circumstancial adverbial and adjunct adverbial. First classification is circumstancial adverbial that specify with different role: complement with 183 data, and adjunct with 178 data. Second classification is adjunct adverbial with typical types: interpersonal adjunct with 13 data, and conjunctive adjunct with 132 data. This classification shows the most dominant elements used in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to help readers understand the context of the book.
