Abstract

This thesis aims to examine the word formations and the meaning of registers related to game mechanics in the Mobile Legends Bang patch notes released in January 2025. The qualitative approach is used conducting the research. The data are registers related to game mechanics. To analyze the word formations, this research uses Bauer’s theory (1983). As for the meaning of each register, this research applies Halliday and Hassan’s theory (1989). From the patch notes, there are 63 registers related to game mechanics. The results of the study on word formation are that among the nine concepts of word formation put forward by Bauer, only seven can be found in 63 registers, namely words, inflectional forms, derivational forms, compounding, lexicalization, clipping, and abbreviations, of which the compounding form is the most dominant with a total of 42 registers. Furthermore, the result of the meaning analysis after comparing those registers field, mode, and tenor in MLBB context with their general context shows that most of their meaning is not the same. This research concludes that the word formation processes influence those game mechanics registers’ meaning. The findings of this research imply that the understanding of word formation is so important to interpret the meaning of registers related to game mechanics in MLBB.
