Abstract

This research discusses how sexual slurs are moderated in the Call of Duty Mobile (CODM) global chat. The study aims to identify which sexual slurs are moderated and unmoderated. The slurs are then categorized based on the theories from Felmlee et al. (2019) and Anderson & Lepore (2011). A qualitative approach was used with an experimental method. In total, 102 sexual slurs were used from the FrontGateMedia database and tested in CODM’s global chat. The results show that the CODM moderation system automatically moderates and blocks many offensive words, but some still escape and remain unmoderated because of several reasons, such as context, alternative spellings, or system limitations. Of the 102 slurs, 69 were categorized as reinforcement of stereotypes, 27 as gendered insults, and 6 as sexual orientation slurs, highlighting the patterns of derogatory language use in online communication.
