Abstract
This study explores the portrayal of grief and internal conflict in grief through an analysis of The Lowland novel by Jhumpa Lahiri. The researcher aims to examine it through the theory of the five stages of grief and internal conflict through the inner world of grief by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her book On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss (2005). The analysis shows that Subhash Mitra portrays the denial, bargaining, depression, and acceptance stages. Gauri Mitra portrays the denial, bargaining, anger, and depression stages. In addition, Subhash's concern with his effort and anxiety in replacing Udayan's roles for Gauri and Bela created a prolonged internal conflict within him. Gauri Mitra's haunting of her loss and her haunting of her relationship with Bela created a protracted internal conflict within her. I argue that Jhumpa Lahiri portrays grief in-depth and accurately, which is reflected in Subhash Mitra's and Gauri Mitra's experiences in grieving throughout the story. I also reckon that Lahiri intricately explores internal conflict, but the novel captivates readers with its believable portrayal. It renders a powerful message, and Lahiri ensures that the character endures the emotional gravity of unspoken secrets and their toll on individuals.
