Abstract

This research is a synchronic descriptive study of expressions of gratitude in Minangkabau nuclear families within the Pauh community from a sociolinguistic perspective. The purpose of this study was to identify linguistic forms of expression of gratitude in the interactions of nuclear family members and explain cultural factors that might influence the choice of linguistic forms. Data was collected by observing, listening to and recording conversations between nuclear family members; in-depth interviews with informants and an interview with a community cultural expert for triangulation purposes. Data were analyzed using the pragmatic equivalence method with social context as a reference. The results of this study indicate that expressions of gratitude found could be divided into two forms: verbal and non-verbal. Verbal expressions were in the ‘agreement’ class. In this class were found: ‘appreciation token’, ‘comment acceptance’, ‘reassignment’ and ‘return’. The most common verbal expression of thanks, regardless of the relationship between nuclear family members, was ‘comment acceptance’. Among the verbal forms were: iyolah!, Emang dari lahianyo lah gagah juo., Hebat mah Pa., Alhamdulillah!, and Mokasih. While non-verbal forms were smiling and laughing. The main factor that seemed to influence expression of gratitude was culture, because the Minangkabau tradition regulates daily social behavior and norms in relationships depending on the level of intimacy between participants and the social context. The words terima kasih were rarely spoken among the family members studied while joking was often used to avoid the impression of self-praise. The form of expression was also influenced by age and level of intimacy among family members. Key Words: Minangkabau, nuclear family, expression of thanks, sociolinguistic, variation.
