Abstract
This thesis discussed the subtitling strategies applied on slang expression in the movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse (2023) from English to Indonesia. The research aims to identify the types of slang expressions as well as the subtitling strategies and methods used to translate slang expressions in the selected movie. A total 122 slang utterances were found in the movie. Miles Morales is the character who utters the most slang expression. This is because he is the main character of the movie. He is also representing teenager by using typical language expression from his age group. The data collection was conducted using documentation method and observation protocol. In classifying the type of slang, the author used Mattiello‟s (2008) theory regarding speaker- oriented properties and Gottlieb (1992) and Legaudaite (2010) for subtitling strategies and slang translation methods. After analyzing the data, the author found four types of slang: Informality and debasement (68.03%), vulgarity and obscenity (13.93%), group- and subject-restriction (10.65%), and lastly time- restriction, ephemerality, and localism (7.37%). Informality and debasement appears as the most frequent type of slang occurs throughout the movie. Regarding subtitling strategies, the author found 7 out of 10 strategies applied. Paraphrase is the most frequent strategy used by subtitler (50.81%), followed by transfer (22.95%) and deletion (17.21%). While expansion (3.27%), dislocation (2.45%), condensation (1.63%), and imitation (0.81%) were less applied. Keywords: subtitling strategies, slang, movies, subtitle, type of slang
