Abstract

This research analyzes the use of translation techniques of verb phrases found in Dorothy Parker's short story, ‘A Telephone Call’ in English to Indonesian, translated by Maggie Tiojakin. It aims to discover the types of verb phrases using Kaplan's (1995) theory and to identify the techniques for translating verb phrases from English into Indonesian by Molina and Albir's (2002) theory. The source of this research is only the English-to-Indonesian translation of Dorothy Parker's short story, ‘A Telephone Call’ which has been translated by Maggie Tjoakin entitled "Dering Telepon". Non-participatory observation and qualitative research with descriptive data are employed for data analysis. This research shows 70 data points from the original and translated versions of ‘A Telephone Call’ short story. The writer finds 6 forms: V + NP 9 data, V + PP 45 data, V + NP + PP 6 data, V + AdjP +PP 1 data, V + AdjP 5 data, and VP + AdvP 4 data. Form V + PP is the most found in the data. Whereas the technique translation shows that there are 5 techniques. These Amplification 13 data, Reduction 20 data, Transposition 5 data, Literal Translation 19 data, and Particularization 13 data. The reduction technique is most found in the data.
