Abstract
This study examines the language style used in student personal chats with their lecturers in the English Department at Andalas University. This study aimed to examine the types of language styles used by the students to their lecturers through WhatsApp personal chat. This study also aimed to examine the social factors that influence the language style used by the students. Purposive sampling was applied to data collection. The data was taken from personal chats with student- lecturers on WhatsApp by applying the theory of Joos (1967) to analyze the types of language styles and the theory from Holmes (2013) to analyze the social factors that influence language style. From 27 data chats, the researcher found 3 of the 5 language style types used in this research. Formal Style 19%, Consultative Style 52%, and Casual Style 30% were used in 27 data students’ chats. In the social factors that influence the language style, the researcher found all of the factors with Participants 41%, followed by Setting 22%, the Topic 15%, and then the last Function was found in 22%. The use of language styles by students towards their lecturers can be influenced by several social factors and students' choice of words to show their formality scale. The concept of the formality scale cannot be separated from the language style the student uses in communicating, which can reflect the use of language in social relationships with their lecturers.
