Abstract

It is important for the translator to translate equivalently the satirical expressions in online webcomics that are read by global readers in order to convey the author's message. Hence, this thesis aimed to examine the forms of satirical expression in the Webtoon entitled "Sarimin" in season 1 and analyze the translation techniques that are used by the Webtoon translator to translate the satirical expressions from Indonesian to English. The data in this qualitative research was selected purposely from the Webtoon by the writer. Moreover, the data was analyzed using the content analysis method, which focuses on the context of the text. The writer applied the figurative language theory of Abrams (1999) to identify the forms of satirical expressions and Molina & Albir's (2002) theory to identify the translation techniques. Results showed that the most found data for satirical expression forms was irony (47.36 %), followed by sarcasm (42.10 %), paradox (7.89 %), and hyperbole (2.63 %), with no data found for the antithesis form. For the translation techniques, it was found that the most frequently applied was modulation (38.8 %), then reduction occurred less (22.22 %), followed by amplification (15.27 %). Other techniques: discursive creation (9.72 %), established equivalent (6.94 %), borrowing (2.77 %), generalization (2.77 %), and adaptation (1.38 %), occurred infrequently in the data. Eventually, the Webtoon author showed the intention of conveying the critique by showing the opposite of reality or the expectation that unhappened in reality using satirical expressions. For the translation techniques, it was revealed that the translator tried to maintain the satirical expressions from SL (Indonesian) to TL (English) by providing the translation sounding naturally and concisely in TL.
