Abstract

This research examines the types of wordplay and its translation techniques in Penguins of Madagascar The Movie dialogue. This research aims to determine the phenomenon of the use of wordplay in movie dialogue and how the wordplay contained in the movie is translated into Indonesian subtitles. The data of this research were taken from the dialogue of Penguins of Madagascar The Movie and analyzed using the theory proposed by Delabastita (1996). This research employed qualitative methods because the data is in the form of words, phrases, or sentences that contain wordplay found in the movie dialogue. The data of this research were collected manually using the note-taking method. In arranging and classifying the data, the tables are used as the research instrument. The findings of this research show that there are seven types of wordplay found in Movie dialogue. They are homonymy, homophony, paronymy, polysemy, idiomatic wordplay, syntactic wordplay, and morphological wordplay. Among all the wordplay found, paronymy and idiomatic wordplay have the highest frequency of occurrence. Meanwhile, there are four wordplay translation techniques that translator use in translating movie subtitles. They are, WP→WP, WP→NON-WP, WP→Z, and WP ST→WP TT. In this research, WP→NON-WP was the wordplay translation technique with the highest percentage.
