Abstract

This research analyzes the medium specificity of Bram Stoker’s Dracula Novel in three different adaptations: a movie adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola, the comic adaptation of The Complete Dracula series by Leah Moore and Friends, and the 16-bit SNES Video game adaptation Bram Stoker’s Dracula released by Psygnosis. This study aims to examine the detailed work of a medium, which transcribes a process from text into three different adaptation works, and to explore the innovations introduced by the creators. This assessment utilizes Linda Hutcheon’s adaptation theory, which focuses on medium specificity that indicates the unique characteristics inherent in a media. Medium specificity also highlights how each medium has its own way of conveying emotion, a message, and atmosphere and gives experience to the audience, consequently showing distinctive aesthetic values that cannot be replicated by one another.
