Abstract
This research examines the utopian and dystopian settings presented in Ernest Cline's novel Ready Player One, including their impact on the themes of Escapism, Power and Control, Identity, and Community. By employing formalist criticism as the primary approach, this research investigates how Cline effectively creates the OASIS, a virtual reality world, as an appealing escape from the depressing world of 2045. This research examines the interaction between the OASIS and the real world by thoroughly investigating narrative techniques and textual elements, revealing the characters' struggles for power and control, their conflicts of identity within the virtual world, and the creation of an active community. The analysis focuses on the complex ways in which the novel's contrasting settings shape and influence the novel's thematic explorations of Escapism, Power and Control, Identity, and Community. Keywords: Utopian setting, dystopian setting, formalist approach, Ready Player One, escapism, power and control, identity, community
