Abstract
This study analyses the issue of alienation and identity from the Japanese- American experience in the novel A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. The author would like to discover the causes and of alienation that occurs to the Japanese - American characters in the novel and how they overcome it. Therefore, the theory of hybridity by Homi K. Bhabha is employed to analyse the reasons why the Japanese - American characters experience alienation and identity confusion. Moreover, the theory of alienation by Seeman is used to bolster the analysis related to alienation that are represented in the novel. To dovetail the discussion about the identity confusion that the Japanese – Americans’ experience in the novel, the author also uses the theory of identity by Stuart Hall. The result shows that the condition of hybridity becomes the main factor why an individual experiences alienation and identity confusion. Alienation is construed as the condition when someone isolates themselves from their society and experiences the cultural estrangement that Nao and Ruth experience in the novel. The author finds that alienation and identity confusion can be overcome by building a connection. The connection that is discussed is related to their own historical and cultural background as Japanese people, their religion, and their connection with other people’s stories that can be achieved through writing.
