Abstract

The Asian Giant Tortoise (Manouria emys) is a critically endangered species, necessitating data on home range extent and habitat characteristics as support for conservation efforts. This study aimed to determine the size of the home range and understand the habitat characteristics of the Asian Giant Tortoise in the Biology Education and Research Forest (HPPB), Universitas Andalas. The research was conducted from October 2023 to January 2024 using GPS tracker methods on four individual tortoises, followed by Minimum Convex Polygon (MCP) calculations with QGIS for home range extent and purposive sampling methods for habitat characteristics. 30 plot points were designated for the analysis of three individual tortoise characteristics, with five plots each for habitats suspected to be more preferred and less preferred within each tortoise's home range area. Based on the research findings, the home range size of tortoises ranged from 2.3 to 25.8 hectares. The home range of each tortoise exhibited nomadic movement. Habitat characteristics of M. emys included areas near water sources (0-50 meters), canopy cover ranging from 65% to 100%, and areas abundant in food sources such as species from the Araceae family.
