Abstract

This study aims to analyze the errors in pronouncing fricative consonants. There are two problems in this study, namely: (1) How are the English fricative consonants produced by the students at MAN 1 Bukittinggi; (2) What are the factors that influence the errors in pronouncing the fricative consonants at MAN 1 Bukittinggi. This study uses a qualitative method and the participants were 20 twelve-grader students of MAN 1 Bukittinggi. There are 500 pronunciations taken from 25 words. The writer recorded student pronunciation, divided into three positions initial, medial, and final. Then, the researcher calculated the data by using the pronunciation score method. In analyzing the data, the main theories used in this research were the theories developed by Giegerich (2005), Ellis (1994), and Selinker and Gazz (2008). The data analysis revealed an average pronunciation score of 12.15 among students, with a score range between 3.9. Afterward, the findings revealed that many students still have problems pronouncing fricative sounds, especially the consonants who doesn’t exist in the Indonesian pronunciation system. For example, consonant sounds in the final position [θ], [ð], [v], and [ʒ]. However, the students also had difficulty pronouncing consonants [f}, [z], and [ʃ] in the medial and final positions. In conclusion, the ability of twelve grader students at MAN 1 Bukittinggi to pronounce fricative consonants in English is Poor. The errors in second language acquisition can be attributed to two types of factors: interlingual and intralingual. Interlingual factors arise when a learner's existing language habits, patterns and rules hinder them from acquiring the patterns and rules of the second language. Intralingual factors, on the other hand, occur when learners are not familiar with both target languages, leading to difficulties in using them.
