Abstract
This research analyzed the lexical density and the grammatical intricacy between narrative and expository texts. This research aimed to find and compare the complexities between both texts based on their lexical density and grammatical intricacy. The data were taken from the narrative text entitled The Too Clever Fox by Leigh Bardugo and the expository text which is an article in a journal entitled Attitudes Toward Regional British Accents in EFL Teaching: Student and teacher perspectives written by Alex Baratta and Nichola Halenko. By descriptive analysis and applying Eggins’ formula, this research showed that the expository text is lexically denser (53%) and more intricate grammatically (2.5) than the narrative text. This research also found that the narrative text is dominated by single clauses and parataxis while the expository text is dominated by hypotaxis and single clauses. This inferred that the narrative text tends to be simple and straightforward writing while the expository text tends to make the level of importance to each clause in the sentence. Therefore, reading expository texts might be more difficult and challenging than reading narrative texts due to their lexical density and grammatical intricacy. The readers need to pay attention to these characteristics to comprehend these kinds of texts.
