Abstract

This study discusses the logical semantic relation between clauses in the book The Complete Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain. This research aims to determine the type of logical semantic relation between clauses through clause complexes in the textbook. This research also seeks to select the dominant type of logical semantic relation used in the text. In conducting this research, the researcher used a qualitative approach to explore and develop the explanation of the object research. Based on the qualitative approach in collecting the data, the researcher identified sentences that could be categorized into clause complexes. The data for this research are all clause complexes in the text of the short stories "Extracts from Adam's Diary" and "Eve's Diary. Accordingly, there are collected 345 data on clause complexes in the text. From 345 data, 339 clause complexes are included in the expansion, and 6 data in the projection. The logical semantic relations found in the clause complexes consist of elaboration, extension, enhancement, locution, and idea, with extension being the dominant. The use of extensions in the text is meant to extend the meaning of the emotions, thoughts, and perspectives of the two main characters of the story. In data analysis, the researcher explains data analysis based on the theory of clause complexes in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014). In presenting the data, the researcher represented the data in table form to show the types of logical semantic relations found in the book The Complete Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain. The researcher also determines the dominant type of logical semantic relations choice to the meaning of the text by calculating according to the formula N=F/n×100%.
