Abstract

This study discusses the impoliteness strategies used in The Ellen Show. This study aims to discover the types and functions of impoliteness strategies spoken by the host and guest through a youtube video entitled The Ellen Show. In conducting this research, the writer uses a qualitative approach. Based on the way qualitative approach in collecting the data, the writer makes an observation by watching youtube video repeatedly and carefully to collect the data. Furthermore, to analyze the data, the writer used impoliteness strategies based on Culpeper’s theory (1996), which was slightly revised in 2005 and 2011 that consist of five impoliteness strategies: (1) bald on record, (2) negative impoliteness, (3) positive impoliteness, (4) sarcasm or mock politeness and (5) withhold politeness. Thus, the functions of impoliteness strategies: (1) entertaining impoliteness, (2) coercive impoliteness and (3) affective impoliteness. In presenting the result of analysis, the writer explains the context of the data based on Leech’s theory (1983). The writer also uses table and chart to describe the most strategy used in The Ellen Show. As far as it is concerned, there are found 20 data contains of impoliteness in The Ellen Show. From 20 data, the writer found 4 types of impoliteness strategies used by the host and guest. There are bald on record containing 1 data, positive impoliteness containing 11 data, negative impoliteness containing 6 data and mock politeness or sarcasm containing 2 data. Moreover the entertaining impoliteness containing 14 data, coercive impoliteness containing 4 data and affective impoliteness containing 2 data. The most dominant types is positive impoliteness and the most dominant functions is entertaining impoliteness.
