Abstract
This thesis discusses the production of English fricative consonants by the students from Senior High School Adabiah II Padang. It aims to analyze how their first language can influence the pronunciation of English fricative consonants. The data was obtained from 20 students, they were asked to read several sentences containing English fricative consonants in three distributions; initial, middle, and final. Then the writer recorded their voices to be analyzed using several theories, Three theories were used in analyzing the final results for this thesis, they were Mehmet (2011 Applied English Phonology, Dardjowidjojo (2009), English Phonetics & Phonology for Indonesians and also Darwis (2006), language testing and evaluation. The findings of this research are written in tabular form, the influences of their first language in the production of English fricative consonants are written under the table. Based on the results of this study, the students or participants are still at a low level to produce English fricative consonants in all distributions. The highest frequency of errors in producing English fricative consonants is fricative consonant [ʒ], the frequency of occurrence was 65% or 13 students failed to pronounce this consonant correctly. The different phonological system between English and Indonesia, and the way the students read the text influenced the final results of this research.
