Abstract

Shigellosis is an acute gastroenteritis disease that is one of the causes of morbidity and mortality in children in developing countries caused by Shigella dysentriae. The treatment usually uses antibitics but it has been widely reported that S.dysentriae has been resistant to various antibiotics. One alternative to overcome this problem is by utilizing fresh extracts of Kersen leaves (Muntingia calabura L.).The purpose of this research isto know potential the fresh extract of Kersen leavesin inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteriaS.dysentriaeand found the MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) and MKC(Minimum Kill Concentration) of fresh extract of Kersen leaves against S.dysentriae.The research was in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University. This research is experimental and the data is analyzed in the form of tables and images. The results showed that fresh extract of Kersen leaves potentially as an antimicrobial against pathogenic bacteria S.dysentriae with a diameter 12-14 mm inhibition zone and classified as strong. MIC of 3,125% while MKC was not found. Based on this, the fresh extract of Kersen leaves only has the potential to inhibit the growth of S.dysentriae but has not been able to kill it. Keywords: Antibacterial, MKC (Minimum Killer Content), MIC (Minimum Inhibition Level), Pathogen, Obstacles Zone.
