Abstract
This study discusses the English coordinating conjunctions and their functions and to analyze how they are translated into Indonesian as found in the English novel Animal Farm. The purpose of this research is to find out the procedures used in translating the English coordinating conjunctions as well as to identify their functions in maintaining the logical relation in maintaining the cohesiveneness of the source and the target texts. The researcher applies qualitative approach and the data were taken from the English novel Animal Farm and the Indonesian translation Republik Hewan. In analyzing the data, the researcher applies Newmark’s theory to analyze the translation procedure. To identify the functions, the researcher used Larson’s and Sneddon’s theory. The findings show that there are four translation procedures used in translating the coordinating conjunctions: literal (73%), reduction (21%), synonymy (3%), and modulation (3%). Regarding the functions, it is found that 33% data use contrastive relation, 30% data use additive relation, 19% do not maintain the logical relation (reduced), 5% data use alternative relation, and the other 5% data show a shifted logical relation. Both translation procedures and the functions of coordinating conjunction are associated with each other because the translation procedure can influence whether the logical relation is maintained, shifted, or reduced.
