Abstract
Garcinia mangostana L. pericarp ethanolic extract was reported to contain some active substances particularly xanthone compounds (α, β and γ-mangostin). These compounds have various activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial and antituberculosis. The aim of this study was to determine the immunomodulatory effects of Garcinia mangostana L. pericarp ethanolic extract and α-mangostin by using carbon clearance method to measure the activity of phagocytic cells in exterminating pathogens which enter into body and to calculate total leukocyte cells. This study used Garcinia mangostana L. pericarp ethanolic extract in following doses 10 mg; 30 mg; 100 mg; while α-mangostin in following doses 1 mg; 3 mg; 10 mg and 0.5% Na CMC as negative control, all were given orally within six days. After six days, carbon suspension in aqueous 1% Tween 80 was injected intravenously to white male mice. The value of phagocytic index (PI) < 1 indicated immunosuppressive activity, while PI > 1 indicated immunostimulatory activity. Then, the data was analyzed by using one-way ANOVA. The results shown that phagocytic index in the study dosages were unsignificantly different than negative control (p > 0,05). The increasing doses of Garcinia mangostana L. pericarp ethanolic extract and α-mangostin were effective to increase imunomodulatory effect. The most effective dose was α-mangostin 10 mg. It was included that Garcinia mangostana L. pericarp ethanolic extract and α- mangostin had immunomodulatory capabilities as immunostimulant.
