Abstract

This study aims to provide an analysis of the reasons behind the placement of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system by the United States on the territory of South Korea. This research uses the concept of geopolitics, geostrategy and uses the extended deterrence strategy. This research uses descriptive research by using kualitative research method and the time limitation of this research is from 2014-2017. In this research, the researchers finds that there was interest from the United States from implementing an extended deterrence strategy by placing THAAD on the territory of South Korea as a form of defense from North Korea's nuclear threat. The way the United States maintains its national interests is to strengthen military alliances with South Korea through the placement of the THAAD anti-nuclear terminal. The form of the interests of the United States in ensuring the stability of the region in East Asia due to economic interests and military interests.
