Abstract

Microencapsulation is one of the technology in the pharmacy that is currently being developed. Previous research has done microcapsule formulation using polystyrene : polycaprolactone bioblend and the result obtained only in laboratory test. This study aims to continue the previous research by direct application on plant with pilot scale production. Microcapsules are prepared by solvent evaporation method with polystyrene : polycaprolactone (2: 1). Evaluation of microcapsules produced include spectroscopicanalysis Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) analysis Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), particle size distribution, determination of urea content in microcapsules, release test, kinetics model of active substance release and plant observation. FT IR analysis showed no chemical interaction between urea and polycaprolactone during the microcapsule process. SEM results show the resulting microcapsules are spherical. The particle size distribution of urea microcapsules is in the range of 50-400 μm. The efficiency of urea microcapsule encapsulation is 86.748 ± 1.5631% and the efficiency percentage of release is 46.541%. The urea release kinetics model of microcapsules follows the langenbucher equation which means its release based on the diffusion and erosion mechanisms. The result of statistical test showed that plant height, leaf width, leaf number and plant weight given by microcapsule had significant different significance (p <0.05) to conventional urea. This suggests that microcapsules gift better crop yields than conventional urea. Keywords : Microencapsulation, Urea, Slow Release, Polystiren, Polycaprolacton
