Abstract
Parents as those who have to take responsibility for the health of the child and take the initiative to provide all types of medication which are considered to improve the children’s health, inadequate parental knowledge about medicines and misunderstandings about how to give action to the child while sick causes long time healing for childhood illness. This study aims to see the description of knowledge and attitude of parents of primary school students in the city of Padang about medicines and know the factors that affect the relationship between knowledge and attitude. The research was conducted by Survey using explanative questionnaire consisting of three parts of Demographic Data respondents, 10 questions to identify the knowledge aspects of respondents and 10 statements for aspects of respondents’ attitude. Respondents were parents of 5th grade primary students who were selected by using Quota sampling method. Total respondents involved as many as 500 parents. Data were analyzed using bivariate analysis of chi-square and Anova. The results showed that 346 respondents (69.2%) had moderate knowledge, while 487 respondents (97.4%) had a positive attitude. Factors that affect the level of knowledge include age, place of residence, occupation, and latest education. There is no correlation between attitude and knowledge (P> 0.05).
