Abstract
In this research, strategies of joke in American Situational Comedy How I Met Your Mother are discussed. The purpose of this research is to identify; (1) Joke strategies used by the characters in American situational comedy HIMYM (2) Pragmatic meanings of jokes used by the charaters in American situational comedy HIMYM and (3) Pragmatic functions of joke used by the characters in American situational comedy HIMYM. This research is categorized as descriptive research. Observational method is applied in collecting the data, whilst ditributional and identity method are applied in analyzing the data. The result of the data analysis in this research is presented in informal and formal method. As the result of analyzing data, 14 strategies of jokes are found to be used by the characters in American situational comedy HIMYM; ambiguity, grammar, syllabics, idiomatic, questionable English, antonymics, style, negativism, lexicography, spelling, punctuation, rhyming English, numerical English and part of speech. The dominant strategy used is ambiguity because many English words are ambiguous and are possible to lead the hearer to multiple interpretation. Jokes which are uttered by the characters in American situational comedy have assertive, directives and expressive meaning. Not only that, jokes also have function to show solidarity, power and psychologial defense of the speaker. Keywords: pragmatics research, joke strategy, joke research, humor research, joke in comedy.
