Abstract

The ability to plan the future is important owned by adolescents in order to utilize the acquired education in schools and in anticipation of events that will occur in the future. However, in the reality some students at SMKN 4 Padang still uncertain to determine their future. One of the factors that influence future career orientation is self-esteem. Self-esteem is a kind of self evaluation that have relationship to the future career orientation. The purpose of this research is seeing the influence of self-esteem toward students’ future career orientation of SMKN 4 Padang. The source of data is 251 students at SMKN 4 Padang that chosen by proportionate stratified random sampling. Measuring students’ self esteem used Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory Scales that consist of 31 items by reliability scale, 0,856. Meanwhile, the future orientation measured by Future Work and Career of Prospective Life Course Questionnaire Scale consist 33 items by reliability, 0,908. The result of this research analyzed by simple regression linear that showed p significant 0,000 < 0, 05. Significant value approved that self-esteem influence toward future career orientation of student at SMKN 4 Padang. For the result, students’ self-esteem have significant influence toward their future career orientation. In the other hand, R2 value is 0,209 that showed self-esteem influence future career orientation in the amount 20, 9%. Based on that value above, the research hypothesis is accepted.
