Abstract

Braces are one of orthodontic appliances that is recent used in Indonesia. Braces moved the teeth as a result of an applied force and pressure on the teeth. Metal are common and widely used for braces as well as medical implants. Metal such as stainless steel and Ni-Ti are conventionally used for medical implant. However, the usage such materials lead to trigger side effect that approximately 7-10% of the population (predominately women) are affected by nickel allergic dermatitis. It is necessary, therefore to obtain a new alloy that has a minimum side effects of Nickels components. Allergic comes out as a result of releasing metal ions excessively from metal corrosion processes by human body fluid. The statements show it needs new metal alloy as a medical implant which for this study are using TNTZ that having a biocompability potential and Ti-6Al-4V that conventionally easy to find. So that the aim of this study are to investigate the corrosion rate of TNTZ alloy (Ti-29Nb-13Ta- 4.6Zr) and Ti-6Al-4V alloy compared with the corrosion rate of conventional of orthodontic materials (SuS 316L and Ni-Ti) and also to know the corrosion type and corrosion mechanism of the alloys. Potentiostat tests are using for this study is Kubokko’s Solution Body Fluid as a model to a human body fluids. The change of surface condition during corrosion process is examined using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). Corrosion rates were determined by calculating Icorr from Tafel curves. The result shows that TNTZ forms a stable Tafel curves than Ti-6Al-4V, with the corrosion rates are less than SuS316L and Ni-Ti. This indicates that TNTZ is potential to use for Biomedical Implants. The surface and component analysis indicates that corrosion type for TNTZ alloy is Leaching corrosion while pitting corrosion occurred in Ti-6Al-4V alloy.
