Abstract

Material multiferroic is a material that has the properties of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic in the one phase. As for the compound has properties of multiferroic is Aurivillius phase compound. The metal used in this study it can to appear of ferroelectric properties. So that to joined this properties is very potential to be developed as Aurivillius compound with multiferroic properties. Five-layered Aurivillius compound Pb2Bi4-yLayTi5O18 (y= 0,1; 0,3; 0,5; and 1) and Pb2-xBi4+xLa0,5Ti5-xMnxO18 (x= 0; 0,1; 0,3 0,5; and 1) has been carried out by molten salts method using mixture of Na2SO4/K2SO4 (1:1 molar ratio) as the flux. Precursor are weighed in stoichiometric proportion and mixed in agate mortar until it is homogenic. The reactant mixtures were place in an alumina crucible and heated at 750°C for 10 hours, 850°C for 10 hours, and 950°C for 5 hours. The products were characterized by XRD and SEM. XRD data were refined by Rietica program with Le Bail technique. XRD patterns showed all product is an Aurivillius five layered wich at consideration with Pb2Bi4Ti5O18 standar, however the samples with x = 0,1; 0,3; and 0,5 contained another phase or impurity as La5Ti5O17. The morphologies of Pb2Bi4-xLaxTi5O18 samples were observed by SEM showed the surface like plates and it is an unique feature of Aurivillius-structure compound. Keywords: Multiferroic, Aurivillius, Molten Salt, Le Bail Technique
