Abstract

The research is about “Verbal Bullying of Speech Act Student SMP PGRI 4 Padang”. The objectives of the research are to identify the form of, the type, the function, and the factors of verbal bullying of the students at SMP PGRI 4 Kota Padang. The data are any students’ utterances of SMP PGRI 4 Kota Padang containing the aspects of bullying. In collecting data, observational method with note taking and interviewing is used. The data analysis is done by referential, translational, and pragmatic identity method. The result of analysis is presented by using formal and informal method. After analysing data, it is found that there are six forms of verbal bullying. They are (1) Name-calling, (2) Embarrassing, (3) Slandering, (4) Cursing, (5) Threatening, (6) Using figurative language. Name-calling dominantly because of this forms refer to physical condition. Furthermore, this forms can be seen by naked eyes and easy to remember. There are four types of speech act involved, namely (1) Representative-- report and state, (2) Directive-- command and request, (3) Expressive-- criticism, and (4) Commissive-- threatening. Directive and expressive are more often used since bullying phenomenon is closely related to the authority and control. Thus, commands and criticism become the choice.. Moreover, the functions of speech act in verbal bullying found are (1) expressive, (2) information, (3) descriptive, and (4) argumentative function. Argumentative and expressive function are used more because of bullying becomes a means for the students to express something in their thoughts perceived to demean and humiliate others. However, such an attitude is not only to harm someone who become the victim of bullying but also to cover the weaknesses of a person being bullied. Then, the factors underlying the frequent occurrence of verbal bullying among students at SMP PGRI 4 Kota Padang is social class. Most of the students in this school come from lower-class family, problematic family circumstances, and differently social environment that may trigger bullying among them.
