Abstract

Early Initiation is one of the success factors for Exclusive Breast Feeding. The rate of exclusive breast feeding in Indonesia is very low. It is affected by mother’s attitude, knowledge, and motivation. The purpose of this research is to measure the effect of early initation of breastfedding counselling in pregnant womans toward mothers behavior in implementation of early initation of breastfedding at Ulak Karang Public Health Centre In 2015. The research is quasi experimental with a control group pretest – posttest. The subjects of research are all late term pregnant womans receiving antenatal care at Ulak Karang Public Health Centre Padang and BPM.There were 32 respondents given counselling and 32 respondents in the control. In collecting Non-Random Sampling, with sampling technique is Purposive Sampling. Independent Variables are Early Initiation Counseling. The dependent variable is knowledge, attitude of the pregnant womans and mothers behavior in implementation of early initation of breastfedding, and other possible factors considered are mother’s education background, parity, economy and social status, and occupation. Data was analyzed by Chi-Square test. The result of study, the influence of early initiation counselling given in increasing knowledge and attitude adjustment about pregnant womans with a P value 0,001 and 0,001. Counselling also influenced mother behaviour in Early Initiation with a P value 0,001. Counseling was found to be effective in increasing mother’s knowledge, attitude, behaviour in Early Initiation. Health practitioners are recommended to provide counseling pertaining to Early Initiation, so that its implementation can be achieved.
