Abstract
This is the research of the translation ideology of the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer and its English translation which was translated by Max Lane with the title This Earth of Mankind. The purpose of this research is to determine the translation techniques used by the translator, determine the translation method used by the translator, and finally determine the translation ideology used by the translator in translating the novel. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method that aims to determine the translation techniques, methods, and ideology used by the translator. The data source of this research is the novel Bumi Manusia and its English translation entitled This Earth of Mankind. The theory to identify the translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002), the theory to identify the translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988), and the theory to identify the translation ideology proposed by Venuti (2017). After analyzing 108 data, the researcher found that there are 10 translation techniques used by the translator, namely amplification of about 56 data, transposition of about 50 data, reduction of about 21 data, literal of about 17 data, modulation of about 11 data, borrowing of about 5 data, generalization of about 2 data, particularization of about 5 data, linguistic compression of about 1 data, and established equivalent of about 1 data. A lot of data is translated using more than 1 translation technique. Based on the majority of translation techniques used by translators, it can be concluded that the translation method is a communicative translation and the ideology is domestication with a tendency to maintain the form of the target language.
