Abstract

This study examines the language styles found in Tinder profile, a dating apps, of selected male and female Indonesian users. The purposes of this study are (1) to describe language style used by selected male and female in their Tinder profiles and (2) to see the tendencies in the use of language styles of male and female users. The data is obtained from the Tinder profiles in Tinder application of 40 selected Indonesian users that consists of 20 men and 20 women aged 18-25 years who wrote Tinder profiles using English language. The theory used in this study is the theory of language styles from Martin Joos (1976). Of 40 Indonesian users' Tinder profiles, it is found 23 casual style, 7 consultative style data, 4 frozen style data, 3 formal style data, and 3 data from intimate style. Among these, casual style is the most dominant one because it is the most appropriate one to be used in relaxed manner and daily conversation. The analysis shows that male users have tendency to use frozen style and intimate style more than female since male are expected to exhibit most despite of sometimes being overly rigid or relaxed. The male users also use consultative style more than female since male mostly start the initiation of relationship. It is also found that female users tend to use casual style more frequently because in dating apps female users try to communicate more subtle and less excessively than male users.
