Abstract

The marketing process of red chili requires management of the trading system. The continuity of trading system depends on quality of the product produced by farmers, insititution performance improvement and the trading system itself. Thus, it will eventually expand job opportunities, increase incomes and welfare of red chili farmers. This study aims to describe channels and functions of each institution's trading system and analyze the margins of the trading system, the share received by farmers, and efficiency of the red chili trading system in Ranah Pesisir Sub-district, Pesisir Selatan District. The method used is descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. The data were collected through survey method. The results showed that there are two patterns of trading channels, namely Channel I: Farmers - retailers - consumers, Channel II: farmers - collectors - retailers - consumers. Marketing functions carried out by farmers, collectors and retailers of red chili consist of exchange, physical, and facility functions. The lowest margin in the trading system I, Rp. 6000/kg, while the highest margin in the trading system is in chanel II, namely Rp. 7,050.94/kg. The share of prices received by farmers in the channel I is 83.33%, share of price in channel II 78.47%. Meanwhile, the smallest trading efficiency (EP) value based on the efficiency of trade system costs is on channel I with the value 2.87%.This study suggests that the trading system institution should consider the efforts and inputs used by the farmers in determining the price. Thus, farmers can do farming consistently and fulfill their household needs.
